How To Plan Your Wedding - 8 Steps From An Expert

So, you’re getting married – how exciting! Now you’ve got to plan the ‘best day of your life’…. daunting? Just a little … we know!

Don’t panic – help is at hand: Food expert and organisational specialist, Andrea Bauer-Kadhim - founder of Wild Peacock, has planned numerous outstanding events and provided delicious catering for VIPs at some of the most prestigious venues including Grosvenor House and Somerset House. Here she gives you her exclusive knowledge of how to plan a wedding – step by step!

Step 1 – Money and Priorities

When you first start planning, sit down together and work out your budget before you book anything and be realistic. Your budget is your reference point - try not to go over it.

Decide what is most important to both of you and what is less important to you and split your budget accordingly.

Decide what jobs need to be done first, and then allocate a month to each job, giving yourself a monthly check list of things to do.

Always spend as much on photography, catering and flowers as your budget will allow. Choose food that is fresh, seasonal and delicious - that you personally love; Do a tasting before you book.

Step 2 – Parents and other people

If parents are contributing to the budget be mindful that you may need to ask for their input at times, but it’s your wedding, so don’t let them take over - lay the law down from the beginning.

Don’t ask too many people for their opinions - this will lead to confusion and will blur your own vision of what you want.

Step 3 - Booking suppliers

When looking for suppliers ask friends who are recently married for their recommendations. Also ask other suppliers for people they have worked with and would recommend.

Book the venue first, then photography, dress, catering, florist, bar and finally entertainment - these are the things that get booked up way in advance. Get these booked as soon as you can to avoid disappointment.

Step 4 – Dress Shopping

When dress shopping, try and only take a maximum of two people with you - people whose opinions you value, who know you well and who will tell you the truth.

Step 5 – Managing Guests

Send out invitations earlier than you think you need to - these days busy people need plenty of notice. Always give a RSVP date earlier than you need it - many guests will need to be chased for their reply.

Guests will cause you stress no matter what, so try not to worry. You can’t please everyone in terms of guest list, children etc. Stick to your decisions and you will remain focused and relaxed.

Step 6 – Add a personal touch

Try and make the wedding personal to you by adding in little DIY bits – you could make the wedding favours yourself - call in the help of friends and family; people love to be involved!

Step 7 – The final organisational checks

The week before draw up a list of everyone involved in your wedding: key family and friend helpers and all suppliers with full contact details. Give this out to all the helpers - this way they will have important contact details at hand for any last-minute emergencies

Make sure that everyone who is on hand to help has allocated jobs.

The week before draw up a time line to give out to the wedding party, the venue and photographer. Event caterers, like Wild Peacock, will often help with this. Always allow more time than you think you need for things like photographs and getting guests from one place to another.

Step 8 – If it all seems too much…

You can always hire a professional wedding planner. They can micro-manage every detail – and take the pressure off you.

Phew! A lot of things to remember - but they are organised here by Andrea with superb logic and precision. With Andrea at the helm, Wild Peacock will not only supply you delicious, seasonal food, but we can also be there to support you in the planning process. We ensure skilful liaison with your venue and suppliers and provide you with a clear itinerary on the day - to ensure the smooth running of the best day of your life!
